Your Wordpress version is out of date.
Blogged on Wednesday, February 20th, 2008 by Rachael. Filed in Administrating, Blog365, Randomness.
I have to confess something to all of you: I, your fearless Geek, am AFRAID to upgrade to the newest version of Wordpress.
Yes! It’s true!
Last time I upgraded, it took me several tries and several oops-I-broke-everything-AUGH-@#$%!DAMMIT episodes. Frankly, I am happy with the way things are right now; however, I really need to figure out how to upgrade without creating a mini disaster that my fellow geek friends snicker about at me on Google Talk.
Matt, I’m talking to YOU.
I will probably do it sometime this month. You know, sometime when I am not simultaneously dizzy and congested, like yesterday. Today, thankfully, I am only congested. Hooray for progress! :p

Just wait a few weeks. Early March, 2.5 is supposed to be released anyway.

easy upgrade option^^ I have used it and it works really well - all ya need to do is activate it as a plugin and go to it’s options :D

@Marilyn, that’s a good point - but that’s how I broke my blog LAST time. I’m still piecing together exactly how it happened, and I know it wasn’t the plugin’s fault, but now I’m superstitious. Heh.

@Sarah, wow, I didn’t know that. Maybe I will just sit tight until then.

Yeah, up until recently, I didn’t upgrade my blog either. I had a rough time extracting my files locally but it worked on the server… go figure. So I took a deep breath and just did it - but after making sure that I had text file copies of everyone of my posts… only about 100 of them so it was manageable. Would still suck to lose the comments though…

I remember MY first upgrade on b2evolution.
They DID NOT mention to make a save copy of my media folder and another thing…..
NOW it is in their readme file, guess why…grmbl….
;)
But the last one went smooth like a cat, so, I lost a bit of my fear and learn a bit every time ;)
Good Luck to you though!
(Didn’t you do a Backup? I didn’t the first time, dooh)

I totally messed up my first try at upgrading. And then my second…and third…
I have the auto-upgrade plugin now and I have to say after using it about 5 times on multiple blogs, it works well! Don’t let one bad experience deter you from using it - it could save you a lot of aggravation down the road!

Here is what inevitably happens to me. I do go ahead and update Wordpress and a week later they have another version or a bug fix or a security issue. “Beta” has a meaning and that’s where the bugs are supposed to be found, not in the version that Wordpress is consistently telling me to download. So I wait for the new round of security issues and then install. But it still happens.

Hey Rachael! Do you use PHPmyAdmin at all? Because there is a way to backup all your posts (including comments) and I can try and find the link for the instructions if you do… just lemme know.
Thanks so much for letting me advertise on here :D

I have the same experience, the last time I do upgrading, my wp-admin page was doing weird. I cannot browse any other page without being taking back to the login page, urrgh….I know this maybe my tiny brain that do a mistake but I don’t know how to fix it now :(

I was worried about upgrading at first too! I don’t know what I did right, but that automatic upgrade plugin worked awesomely. It was like magic. :-)

Manual upgrades always stress me out.. I’ve been thinking about trying the plugin - since it was endorsed here.. I might just try it.

I feel the same way. I have a blog right off my main site and it says all the time how this version is out of date. I tried 3 times to update but could not figure it out and totally messed up the entire blog. Now I have it working but I am scared to update it :(

Honestly, I’m just to lazy to upgrade. I was using 1.5 well after 2.2 came out and finally upgraded when 2.3 came out. Now since that blog I have to do manually I have since put any other blog as a server update so I don’t have to screw with it ;)

I know the feeling… I hate updating my blog software! It always winds up being more trouble than it is worth.
