YAWN.

Blogged on Sunday, March 9th, 2008 by Rachael. Filed in Blog365, Philosophical.

Twice every year, I become extra annoying. Every time we have Daylight Saving Time here - and I still haven’t figured out which one is ‘on’ and which is ‘off’ - I go around for the next few days reminding everyone around me what time it was, right now, BEFORE the time change. As if they care, right?

Did you know that right now the clock says it’s 11:06am but YESTERDAY, at EXACTLY this time, it was 10:06am?! HAHA!

I’m so hilarious!! Anyway.
Last night before we went to bed, we made sure to turn all the clocks forward. ALL of them. Because as any of you with children know (or if you remember doing this when you were a kid), if you leave just one thing unchanged, that’s the thing they notice and are confused by. I had to sneak into their rooms at 1:12am and change their clocks to 2:12am, just so that nobody would wake up this morning and start an argument about what time it is because MY CLOCK SAYS IT’S THIS TIME and YOURS MUST BE WRONG and NO MINE IS ALWAYS RIGHT and of course MOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!! AUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH1!!!11!1!!!!

So then Troy and I did the adult thing and stayed up far too late because, you know, we weren’t tired yet (arg), because we’re stupid like that. So now I’m nursing a giant mug of coffee while the kids happily play like normal, because they don’t agonize yet about losing versus gaining an hour of sleeping time, and how it always seems to coincide with crazy sleep schedules anyway, and augh, why don’t we live somewhere (Arizona!) where they don’t use this barbaric time system!

This is completely unrelated to all of that time-related angst, but I’ve gone and binged at the library again. This time, however, I am trying to READ all the books before they’re due back, instead of looking longingly at them while I’m working or doing something else, then returning them a few days late because I’m just so positive that I’m going to have time to read it TONIGHT! Really!

Here’s the list of books I have checked out right now (and the ones I’ve already started are in bold):
On Bullshit, by Harry G. Frankfort
Grace (Eventually): Thoughts on Faith, by Anne Lamott
Plan B, by Anne Lamott
A Briefer History of Time, by Stephen Hawking
A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini
How To Be Good, by Nick Hornby
The Reincarnationist, by M.J. Rose

I shit you not, I checked out the Stephen Hawking book because ‘A Brief History of Time’ was NOT BRIEF ENOUGH for me. I could barely get through it in the several weeks of check-out time I got, which is horribly ridiculous, because I used to read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy in less than two weeks back when I was still in the habit of re-reading that every six to eight months or so. Sigh. Those were the days, when I had so much more time for reading and for actually assimilating the material I read.

I could still read fast now - I do - but I don’t retain nearly as much as I used to. It’s a real bitch to speed-read your way through a great book and then realize that you couldn’t have an intelligent conversation about it with someone else who’d read it, because you don’t remember enough of it.

One of my goals for this year is to actually READ some books. Not just skim them or check them out and stare at them for a few weeks. Actually read them. Maybe I need to get off the computer now and go finish one.

(Oh! Did you know - that yesterday at this EXACT TIME, it was AN HOUR EARLIER than it is right now?! I know, right?! *Yawn*)

Ha!! I told Kayla to wake me up at 8am this morning. She woke me up, I looked at the clock - 7am. WTF, I thought to myself. I guess that’s what I get for not watching TV or listening to the radio. I didn’t realize it was daylight savings time, had no clue. I’ve been reading a lot lately, wish I could give you some of my free time! Have a great day!

great picks from the library. How to be Good is phenomenal. it makes me want to read all the Nick Hornby i can find. also, good call on both Lamott books (have you read Bird by Bird?) and Bullshit is great too! Let me know how Briefer History compares to it’s big brother…

I love reading posts about books!

All I know is, I’m just glad I didn’t have to go in to work today. Let alone go into work for my 5am shifts. How freakin’ awful would that be? Having to in at 4am. Oh crap. Wait. It still would be 4am wouldn’t it? Gawdamn!

Thanks for advertising with me on Entrecard :) I live in Michigan and have all my life, so of course I am a slave to DST as well. In college I had a suitemate that was from some State that didn’t have DST (um, I can not remember where she was from, it was a LONG time ago). I can still remember one night the three of us trying to explain it to her. She could NOT wrap her head around the concept.

Ha. I hate daylight time changing too. Although I’d possibly hate it more if I had you reminding me every ten minutes that yesterday it would of been time to finish work, or yesterday you could stay in bed for another hour.

Whoever came up with Daylights Saving surely did NOT have any children. I’m horribly slow with reading too. At least now I am with a mommy brain :( Thanks so much for for stopping by and leaving your comment. It’s great to have someone who can relate…

I feel ya on “A Brief History of Time.” I got through maybe… half. I couldn’t deal. I’m switching back to chick lit.

@Everybody, I did manage to FINISH one book so far. Hooray for me! I read all of Anne Lamott’s Grace (Eventually), and loved it. Now I want to finish another library book before they’re due. :)
