My perfectionism is my downfall.

Blogged on Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 by Rachael. Filed in Blog365, Emo.

Guys, this is pretty ridiculous, if you think about it.  I have a business - a web design business - that I am still putting the website up for.  STILL.

Do you know why I am STILL putting it up?  Because I am being a perfectionist about it!

On the one hand, being picky about what I put up is a good thing, because it showcases my attention to detail and my eye for balance.  On the other hand, being this picky is actually detrimental to my business taking off like it should, because I DON’T HAVE A WHOLE WEBSITE to showcase my aforementioned attention to detail and eye for balance.

Sigh.  Also, kicking myself in the head.

So far I have it partly up, so could you go take a look and then yell at me to finish it?  Possibly if I have a mob of annoyed readers I will have more motivation to get over the perfectionist stage and just get it DONE, dammit.

Here: Caffeinated Design & Hosting.

You’ll notice that I don’t have at least two of the most important things up yet - my portfolio or my pricing list.  As if anyone can hire me if they don’t know what I can do or what it costs.  Am such an idiot.

I think it looks great! As far as posting prices, I really think that may depend on what type of clientel you are expecting to catch the eye of.

Keep chugging along. You’ll finish one day, Im sure.

@Matt, that was so nice and encouraging. Thank you!

The stupid thing is that I *have* a price list, I just haven’t figured out the best way to organize it so that it doesn’t clutter the page. I like each page to be clean and easy to read, even when there is a lot of information contained in it.

I think I’d back the ampersand off from “hosting” a wee bit, at first glance it looked vaguely like rhosting. But then I am a kerning freak so it’s probably just me.

I can SO relate! I have a similar deal going on with my blog and moreso with my main web site.

You have my complete support in putting up a so-called imperfect site and then happily tweaking it day by day. What you notice as horrible, others will possibly praise as amazing.

The phrase which comes to mind is this one:

“Better an imperfect success than a perfect failure.”

I repeat that to myself every day. It seems to be working, albeit slowly.

    Be well!

Sometimes when something is your own like that, your own business, it’s OK to be over-perfectionistic about it. It represents you, and you want to put your best out there. But set a deadline perhaps to motivate yourself to finish everything.

Wow, guys - I didn’t expect such an outpouring of encouragement, lol. I’ve been working on the prices and package details so that when I open it up in Photoshop, I can finish it with no problem. It’s the money part that’s difficult, I guess, because I’m not used to asking to be paid what I’m worth. Heh.

@Mark, thanks for the kick in the pants. No, really. LOL.
