HALP!!!
I am picking colors with which to paint the walls! The walls of my new soon-I-will-be-living-in-it house! That I walked through and squee’d over this morning! That has awesome hardwood floors and some nastyass carpeting that needs to be steamcleaned!
I have here a photo for you, which I helpfully uploaded to Flickr and then put notes all over so you know what craziness I am trying to talk about, and would you please oh please click on it and go there and tell me what you think and so on and so forth?!
THANK YOU!!
(I’m sure I will be less crazy soon. I’m just a little, you know, REALLY FREAKING EXCITED!!!!11!!!)

As someone who just spent 5 year rehabbing a victorian I’ve dealt with a wee bit o’ paint. Here are my thoughts.
Green is hard as (*(#@) to get right and when it looks bad… It looks puking bad. If you go with a green absolutely get a tester quart and paint a patch of wall with it. (This is always a good idea anyway.)
I’m a fan of “neutrals” in living areas. I painted my living room walls a deep chocolate brown. It made a great foundation for deep red furniture and “arts & crafts” era art. So pic based on the “feel” you are going for in a room.
Yellow is another one ot be careful with. The right shade can be amazing (my dining room was yellow) but the wrong shade will put your eyes out. Again, test, and when in doubt go two shades LIGHTER, trust me on this.
Reds are fun and my favorite kitchen color (with white cabinets, an easy way to spruce up an old kitchen). Go with something deep and velvety (careful to avoid the “80s prom dress fuchsia”) and you can NOT go wrong.
I like light colors in bedrooms as they tend to be smaller rooms. Color is so individual. None of those swatches really “work” for me but I tend to grab the “idea” books at every paint store in town and pick from those. They usually give you example rooms with looks ad color schemes and give you a much better idea of what it looks like on a whole wall.
Chris’s last blog post..A bit of fun…
Wow, Chris – THANK YOU. That’s great concrete advice!
I’ve weirdly never had trouble with greens or yellows, but i’ve only ever used warm light shades of those. I love brown but there is brick in the family room in the new house – and it’s orangey based, and there is already a brown color on the walls and it’s just WRONG looking. I figured I ought to avoid it.
I’ve seen bedrooms in dark colors that were gorgeous, but I always worry about the smallness factor – how little will it feel in here if the walls are DARK? And so on.
Thanks again. :)
another good resource might be the HGTV website. they have a lot of great ideas. some not so great, but some that are really good! i agree with a lot of what chris said too. green is freaking HARD. (see note on your flickr! hahaha!)

I love all the most vibrant colors on those cards. I’m not much a subtle color kind of girl.

I actually have a dark bronze on my bedroom walls I took from the colors of the quilt on my bed. It is dramatic but so cool, and it doesn’t make my bedroom seem small like people talk about. But, just looking at colors on your table doesn’t help pick the color for the room. You need to take into consideration the furniture and shape of a room. Too see what it will look like on a wall in general go to sherwinwilliams.com
