Geek Favorites: Flavors Of The Week.
Blogged on Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 by Rachael. Filed in Geek Favorites, Linking.
I am the kind of geek that downloads and installs things with alarming regularity, and uninstalls them at a nearly as alarming rate. I go through new apps like they’re candy, and throw away what I don’t like. Like those icky coconut-filled chocolates. EW. Hand me the raspberry-cream-filled kind and I am IN HEAVEN.
Anyway.
I thought I would grace you all with a list of what I’m running lately, and quite possibly why, unless my reason was just because I wanted to see what would happen if I clicked on it.
Flavors Of The Week here at Chez Geek:
Digsby
[Download Digsby - Windows only so far]
Digsby is the best thing since the Google Talk app came out! No, seriously. It rocks. I can check my Gmail, Hotmail, or Yahoo accounts (Gmail for me, baybee); my Facebook account; my Twitter account - and post to it (W00T!); and all my IM accounts. Which, for me, are AIM, YahooIM, Google Talk, and MSN messenger. (If you want those, email me and ask nice.)
(Now you can see why I need a multi-IM app.)
Firefox 3 Beta 4
[Download Firefox 3 Beta 4 - Windows, Mac, Linux]
Quite simply, the beta releases have been really stable and very kind to me when I check my Gmail account on the web. Firefox 2 constantly crashed and had that extremely frustrating memory leak whenever I was in Gmail. Even though not all of my favorite addons are ported to FF3 yet, several of them are (hello GButts and All-in-one Sidebar!).
I also love the new Firefox features right out the box: the smart address bar (it uses your history to help you find what you’re looking for), for one; and the ‘Save and Quit’ option when you shut down. Simple things, yes, but I find them very handy.
Joost
[Download Joost - Windows, Mac]
I’ve actually been totally in love with Joost for at least a month now. Troy and I are in the habit of watching an episode of Star Trek (the original series!) before bed every night - it’s like our grownup way of having a glass of warm milk and a lullaby so we know it’s sleepy-time. What’s not to love about streaming television for free? So far, this has been better than Miro.
Well kiddos - that’s it for this week’s installment of Geek Favorites. Leave me your faves in the comments, please! I always need something else to try. :)

@Sixty, yeah - I have used Flock, and it’s pretty sweet. I found it too cumbersome for me, though, and it was a HUGE time-suck, lol. Its Flickr capabilities really rock.
@Troy, you always say the sweetest things, babe. :)
@Dutchess, I’m SO GLAD I could help!
