75: Liveblogging Turkey Day. (Refresh to see the latest.)
Blogged on Thursday, November 22nd, 2007 by Rachael. Filed in Holidays, Randomness.
This year, we are doing Thanksgiving here at our house. (What on earth does ‘doing’ Thanksgiving even MEAN?!)
So, in honor of the first time I have made our very own Thanksgiving feast, I thought it would be immensely fun to liveblog (as much as possible) the process. Since I only just now thought of it, I have to go back in time a few hours and fudge a bit to get in what’s already been done. But that’s fun too!!
Thanksgiving Eve
8:00pm (apprx.)
: found turkey breast on sale at Wal-Mart, $1.51 a pound. W00T!
: stuck in long line to pay for food. SUCK.
: struck up conversation with fun person in line behind me - hooray for meeting people randomly!
10:00pm (apprx.)
: turkey breast directions say ‘thaw in fridge for 24-48 hours’. scoff at directions.
: put turkey breast (in packaging obviously, don’t be gross) in sink full of icy cold water.
Thanksgiving Day
12:30am
: go to bed, dreams of turkey, stuffing, and jelled cranberry dancing in my head.
10:00am
: notice it snowed last night. ooh, pretty! my car is all white!
: have coffee finally. eat breakfast doughnut (apple fritter!), which i do not usually do, but it is a holiday and that is when we punish our bodies with too much good (bad for you) food.
: discuss with boyfriend when exactly to put turkey breast in. consult cookbook.
10:20am
: get online and goof off. tell several friends happy thanksgiving.
: invite friend over who has nothing to do at dinner time.
: start iTunes playlist because i like music.
10:40am
: set kids up with construction paper, scissors, glue sticks, markers, and crayons - they are making custom placemats. (yeah, i know you’re jealous)
: second cup of coffee.
10:50am
: take a shower finally. CLEAN FEELS SO GOOOD.
11:30am
: pull out all pans and casserole dishes, divide ingredients up according to what pan/dish will be used.
: calculate optimal oven temperature to get all dishes done in optimal time.
: begin making yummy butter/thyme/rosemary basting sauce for turkey.
12:30pm
: turkey in!
: joey helps mix up green bean casserole. set aside for later.
1:00pm
: cake in!
: ribs in! (yes, we are ALSO making bbq ribs. you know, for a backup. hahaha.)
: lissie helps drizzle honey on sweet potato/apple/cinnamon dish. set aside for later.
1:12pm
: kids eat snack of cake doughnut and banana.
1:38pm
: experienced for the first time the insane joy of forcing a can full of jelled cranberry sauce to come OUT.
: shrieked with laughter (joey was shrieking too) because it came out WHOLE.
: put cranberry-can-shaped sauce in fridge. teehee. must resist urge to poke it.
1:53pm
: cake done! must resist urge to poke it.
: kids wildly throwing paper airplanes around the living room. am glad i moved the coffee table out of the way of potential head injuries.
2:14pm
: lissie helps mix up cornbread. we’re making it johnny-cake style, in one round pan, instead of muffins.
: turn on tv, find black and white movie. kids immediately calm (whew).
: put cornbread in oven. turkey smells SO GOOD. must resist urge to poke it.
: also, ribs smell SO GOOD. must resist urge to eat them directly out of the pan.
2:58pm
: cornbread cooling slightly on top of the stove. tried a piece - SO YUMMY!!
: basting turkey for the 4th or 5th time. it’s getting deliciously tender.
: re-anointed ribs with more bbq sauce. also getting deliciously tender.
: wishing i could just start eating NOW and include each new dish as it’s done. oh well.
3:20pm
: desperately wanting to eat ribs NOW.
: fixing third cup of coffee instead.
: put transformers movie in, but dvd player rebels by causing it to skip. malicious dvd player!! *shakes fist*
: letting dvd player cool down and take a chill pill.
: kids eating second snack of cheese and crackers (less sugar).
3:55pm
: movie working now, hooray!
: ribs are done. turkey nearly done. almost time to start sweet potatoes and green bean casserole.
: wondering how long it will take me to make the gravy.
4:49pm
: troy is carving the turkey, which is falling apart from the tenderness.
: i tasted the gravy, it is DELICIOUS.
: i tasted the ribs (again), and burnt my tongue on awesome.
: green bean casserole is almost done.
: stuffing (the boxed kind) is in process.
: sweet potato apple dish is also in process, but i had to turn down the oven because it was almost becoming crispy, which sounds good but probably isn’t the best idea.
: THE EATING IS SO CLOSE NOW, I CAN ALMOST… TASTE IT.
5:01pm
: forgot that a glass lid was hot (as it had been in the oven), and grabbed it with my bare hands.
OW DAMMIT!1!! this makes this the BEST THANKSGIVING EVAR!!!
5:06pm - 6:00pm(ish)
: ate alllll the yummy food. oh heavenly food.
: got huge stomach aches (all of us). waiting for it to settle, then we eat DESSERT!

Sounds like you had an awesome day, mama. A nice, small family T-day dinner. Mmmmmm… Love you! And so happy for you too (don’t remember if I’ve told you that). You so deserve to be happy.
