73: He spells awesome like OSUM.

Blogged on Thursday, November 8th, 2007 by Rachael. Filed in Guest blogger, Nano, Randomness.

This post is all about how osum it is that my oldest son spells words like they sound.

Now, I got his permission before writing this post. I’m not doing this to make fun of him, and he’s quite alright with how hard I laugh when I read some of the things he’s written. He is participating in the younger peeps’ version of Nano, which is the Young Writers Program. There is an awesome (osum) workbook that each kid gets, which I am totally jealous of because *I* want one to help me write MY novel, and he went through the entire thing already and it is absolutely full of the most cleverly constructed spellings imaginable.

See, he doesn’t like to ask for help. He’d really rather do it all on his own (sound like anyone you know?!), and so he occasionally figures out words on his own so he can just keep on writing what he’s writing.

Here, for your consumable pleasure, are some of the most osum words he has written in Joey-style (see if you can figure out what they are by yourself - I’ll put the correct spellings at the end of the post):

bascet
cumputere
peopol
tiping
dringcking
no buteay
jocse
hanted manchen
ded flys
woter
pincht
smol (also smoller, sometimes smoler)
lionse
ceap
pingck
wihght
tol
angreay
shacke
crabeaye
spookeaye
thengcs
smellea

Isn’t that OSUM?! It’s almost better than cheezburgerish. Before I give you the answers (ansers) to the above list of incredibly sweet words, here is Joey, who wanted to type something:

“i love you. i am 6 years old. i am going to rite about mi hermit crab. mi baby bruther is 2 years old. an mi sister an she is 8 years old. mi mom wonte tel me how old she is. mi hemit crab is mi faverete pet of ol. wan time he pincht me an it hert realy bad.”

That, for your information, is a piece of writing he expects to be able to include in his novel, and he will of course, because he knows how to up his wordcount like a Nano PRO. :D (It was so cute watching him quietly sounding out each word he was typing, and hovering carefully over the spacebar. He loves the spacebar.)

So, here are the words from above with their “correct” (pfft! Down with the establishment!!) spellings next to them:

bascet = basket
cumputere = computer
peopol = people
tiping = typing
dringcking = drinking
no buteay = nobody
jocse = jokes
hanted manchen = haunted mansion
ded flys = dead flies (food of choice for crabs)
woter = water
pincht = pinched
smol (also smoller, sometimes smoler) = small, smaller
lionse = lions
ceap = keep
pingck = pink
wihght = white
tol = tall
angreay = angry
shacke = shake
crabeaye = crabby (name of his crab, although honestly this might not be a misspelling.)
spookeaye = spooky
thengcs = thanks
smellea = smelly

Who thinks I should give this boy a blog of his own? :D
