42: oh hai penguicon was awsum i am dead tired

Dudes. Just… wow. That was so much fun and so much lol and so much caffeine, and so much not-enough-sleep, and so much EVERYTHING.

I met some awesome, awesome people (and observed some extremely odd looking people as well, roflcopter), and made fun of the dance music and the dubbed anime (ACK!), and enjoyed the writing panel and the smart people who were there, and stayed up until 7am Saturday morning and then had two hours of sleep and then got five hours (or so) sleep that night and WHEW. I’m feeling tired and buzzed just from typing that.

I actually overdosed on caffeine twice, which was moronic and stupid of me, although I hadn’t ever done that before so I didn’t realize it would happen. I got the shakes and was uber dizzy and had to be helped to a sitting position and given bottles of water which I was then instructed to DRINK RIGHT NOW. And I kept forgetting to eat, probably because the excess of caffeine was fuxing with my appetite-reminder. I can remember some breakfast, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, some chocolate, multiple cups of coffee, and tins of caffeinated mints, but… not much other than that, haha.

Personally, it was great to go somewhere for a whole weekend and just blow off steam. My level of dorky wasn’t even CLOSE to the levels of dorky from many of the attendees, which was simply awesome. Finally, a group of people in which I didn’t stick out like a sore geeky thumb!

Lastly, it has not escaped my notice that this post number is 42, which as you know is the number of life, the universe, and everything. At first I was disappointed that my post seems to be doing a very bad job of living up to such a weighty number, but… life is really kind of random, stupid, and mostly pointless much of the time, yes? So this post celebrates the pointlessness, randomosity, and stupidity inherent in real life.

Woo!

My level of dork I think was slightly higher than yours, and I still felt uncomfortable at times. Next time, I’m defently planning a head and getting a room.

Also, I’ve never OD’d on caffiene. Came close with sugar, once, however. I was a party at a buddy’s house and I thought I saw Bob Newhart in his Christmas tree

So I know you’ve had the same picture up on your blog for quite some time, but I must acknowledge the awesome quote on your t-shirt: “Writing well is the best revenge.”

    LOVE it!!!

I thought everyone goes to Penguicon to experience the joy of being out-geeked. ;)

Everyone I ran into complained about the dubbed anime, what’s up with that? Who said it was a good idea in the first place?

Which writing panel did you go to? My buddy Dave was on a half-dozen or so author panels, but I missed most of them. The trouble with con is that you can’t co-locate yourself.

(of course, I say that now, but maybe next year’s guest will be all about multiple presence, heh)

Oh, and I saw you added me in the land of LJ, and I’m procrastinating on ‘real work’, so here I is. *bows*

PS Do you have an RSS syndication on LJ? They’re cake to set up, and if you don’t, I (with the requisite paid account) can do it for you. Then you can put it in your LJ info, and have your cake and eat it, too.

Matt, LOL. Yeah, I think you’re dorkier than me, and yeah, definitely a room next year would be better than having to try staying awake for an undetermined number of hours. :D

Kate - thank you! I do love that quote so much. You should shoot Fussy.org an email and let her know how awesome you think it is. :D

atdt… I emailed you back about the RSS thingy.

And yeah. Dubbed anime!! WTF!!! I only want it in Japanese, kthxbye. ;)

*bows back* Thank you for your obedience. You shall be spared. (don’t ask from what, I haven’t got that far)

Between Sunday and Monday, I think I slept over 20 hours. More than made up for the 2 hours of painful sleep in the volunteer’s room.

And not all dubbed anime is bad. Just most of it.

Meh, Matt… you might be right, but I haven’t seen the dub that I enjoyed yet. So I’m hanging onto my purism for now, lol.

And I dunno what the RSS is about, he hasn’t emailed back yet.

Glad to hear that you had a great time! It’s weird being surrounded with people with higher levels of geek cred, isn’t it?

Hey, you take your anime in Japanese? ??????

LOL, Rick. Now if I could *read* kanji (I assume that’s what that is), that would be even better. ;)

    “nihongo shaberu” -> “speak Japanese?”

My Japanese has deteriorated to almost nonexistence because of how little I use it now, but I’ll still take subtitled over dubbed any day. Even if I can only pick out every tenth word, it still makes me feel minimally competent. =)

Ah… I can understand some spoken Japanese, and speak a few words. I’m working on it, though. :D

It’s super-easy to speak (at least in relative terms.) The grammar is simple, pronunciation is consistent and easy for English speakers, and there are very few ‘exceptions’ to the basic rules of the language. Kanji are the reason that it gets a reputation as being a killer language to learn, and they just require a lot of memorization.

It’s totally worth the effort to learn Japanese; it’s a fairly different way of forming your thoughts than English, and so learning it warps your mind in interesting and mind-expanding ways.
