14: Some half-assed (and consequently mostly stupid) resolutions.
Blogged on Saturday, January 6th, 2007 by Rachael. Filed in Randomness.
Now that it’s comfortably past the first of the year, I can list some serious and semi-serious resolutions that I have, in actuality, been thinking of. I guess it’s just too ingrained in me/us/our culture to make resolutions at the start of every new year, and apparently I’m very bad at going against the grain when it comes to planning and making lists, because I LOVE LISTS.
To wit:
- I resolve to finally finish reading Eldest (you know, the one after ‘Eragon’), which for some awful reason has several beginning chapters which are so uninteresting that I have literally read them three times and I’m still not sure what I read. But my sis-in-law gave it to me TWO YEARS ago for my birthday, so dangit, I need to finish it already. I’m such an ungrateful swine.
- I resolve to attempt to write one to two real pen-and-paper letters every week. There are several people I care about that are either a) not easily reachable by email, b) not easily reachable by phone, or c) would really appreciate a “real” letter more than the other two options anyway.
- I resolve to actually mail the letters that I write, put in envelopes, and properly address. So many steps to take with REAL letters.
- I resolve to read one book every month, and to write up at least a halfway decent review on my blog here. I have so many more than twelve books to read that I should say ‘I resolve to read one book every week,’ but then my head would explode thinking about it and I would maybe not even start. Unrealistic goals are stupid.
- I resolve to finish learning how to use my ultra-spiffy camera, so that my photography this year can reach new (I hope) heights.
- I resolve to do regular computer backups - once a week at least.
- I resolve to attempt to finish at least two knitting projects that I’ve already started, and to finish two more that I will most definitely start this year (because I have start-itis, which if you know me you already knew). I have so many half-done things that I would love to be able to wear or use, but my knitting ADD is causing me not to finish them. No more! Well, okay, not as MUCH, maybe.
- I resolve to finish writing my Nano novel! Because if I don’t, a few people will probably either kill me outright or hold me down until I finish it. And they won’t let me write it stupid, either. Darn them.
- I resolve to live life unfettered by resolutions. No, really. If I live by these, I will only see each day in terms of what I can accomplish in it, rather than just seeing the day itself and being open to whatever happens. Being too results-based makes me too narrowly focused. I prefer to think of these as mostly just guidelines.*
If you’ve blogged any resolutions, can you leave me a link in the comments? I’d love to read them. Other people’s lists are also fun and addicting. Or you can leave them here if you prefer.
*If you understood that obscure-ish reference, tell me what it was in the comments and I might give you… a cookie!

Okay, so I was determined enough to comment on this particular blogposting, therefore I registered. First off, here’s my ResLus:

(The Dreaded New Year’s Resolutions)
Secondly, something struck me with your last one - somehow causing me to ask my boyfriend to stop and listen while I read it aloud. It’s familiar enough to where I may have read it before; but somehow perfect in current life application for both my bf and I. So thanks!
Looking forward to a year of book reviews and new blogger friends…

Computer backups are easy! I have Windows backup set to automatically backup each night and then make a copy to my Linux box AND a portable hard drive that can be stored away from disaster :) (can you tell I’m a REAL nerd?)

HI. The book is very good. I’m getting much more from it now than I did when I first read it years ago. I’m almost done with it . I’ll loan it to you.
The referance you made is kind of familar but I can’t bring it to the front of my brain. I’d still like a cookie. : (
Jan 10, 2007
Hi dad! I’ll reveal the answer in my next post, but so far you’re the only one who’s actually ASKED for the cookie. Hmph. ;)

This reminds me of Jonathon Edwards; he had some pretty nifty resolutions, though not nearly as witty as yours.
Rachael, it’s been far too long since we’ve talked. I want to read more of your writing! I want to hear more about life resolved with things like addressing letters! I want to talk about books!
And, to reply to a previous comment from you, I’d love to talk about how to make my site more Jimish instead of just blogger in a box.
Oh why are Grand Rapids and Flint so far apart…

because they had to make room for Lan Sing.

bondwolf: Do you have a new e-mail address or something?
Jan 11, 2007
No… it’s still the gmail one. Why? Did you send me something that I didn’t get?
Jan 11, 2007
wolfey says you don’t reply to her mail, so she wasn’t sure you were getting it.

The last thing she emailed me was about a neopet, and I *did* go and sign up for one today. But she hasn’t written me anything personal since a little before Christmas… that I’ve gotten in my email, that is.
Jan 12, 2007
she’s at work right now…and i’m cruisin early in the day. david crowder is going to mars hill tomorrow. i wanna go!
so….i never got my neaopet in the mail….just a link. but we looked through the pets together.
;)
take care today. enjoy the slush. just add your favorite flavor to it and it’ll be ok.
